INESC TEC part of European network of excellence in Artificial Intelligence

A team of researchers from INESC TEC’s Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support Laboratory (LIAAD) will participate in the European network HumanE-AI-Net, which aims to develop a new scientific approach to make Artificial Intelligence more humanised, consistent with European and universal values and closer to citizens.

This network, composed of top European laboratories and researchers in Artificial Intelligence (AI), was one of five recently approved in the ICT-48 call, and it aims to take an important step in the European AI strategy promoted by the European Commission, thus consolidating scientific connections in Europe.

Considering AI as the core of technological revolution, the HumanE-AI-Net network focuses on the scientific and technological development of AI systems, so that they improve human intelligence, rather than replacing it.

More specifically, the main goal is to leverage synergies between the participating centres of excellence, in order to develop the scientific foundations and promote the technological enhancements required to improve AI systems – so they can support human beings, both individually and socially, in compliance with European ethical values and social norms.

The European project HumanE-AI-Net was accepted in March 2020 and it includes 50 partners from all over Europe, including INESC TEC, which is represented by the LIAAD team of researchers – more specifically, João Gama, Alípio Jorge and Rita Ribeiro.

The INESC TEC researchers mentioned in this news piece are associated with UP-FCUP and UP-FEP.
