INESC TEC part of European project on the use of Artificial Intelligence in wireless communications

INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM) is part of a new European project focused on the experimental validation of Artificial Intelligence techniques to manage the Wi-Fi networks of the future. It is called SMART, and it was approved within the scope of the 8th FED4FIRE + Open Call.   

The project began on November 1, aiming to carry out several tests with wireless communications, in order to validate a Machine Learning approach capable of optimising the Wi-Fi communications of the future. This approach has been the main subject of several MSc and PhD theses developed at INESC TEC.

According to Rui Campos, the project coordinator, SMART “will enable the experimental validation of an approach based on Artificial Intelligence techniques, in order to manage the Wi-Fi networks of the future, a growing trend in the field of telecommunications”.

With €55K funding and a duration of 10 months, the SMART project is one of the three INESC TEC’s projects approved in the frame of Fed4FIRE + Open Calls: the first project was SIMBED, with €95K (within the scope of the 3rd FED4FIRE + Open Call), and the second was SIMBED+, which obtained the same funding, and was approved in the context of the 5th FED4FIRE + Open Call.

The CTM team composed of Flávia Procópio, Hélder Fontes, Jaime Cardoso, José Ruela, Rogério Dionísio and Rui Campos represents INESC TEC in this project. It is important to mention that the SMART project obtained a score of 55 points (out of 60 possible), the second best project of the four approved, in a set of 31 proposals submitted.
