INESC TEC spin-off acknowledged as one of the most promising in the world in digital health

ILoF – Intelligent on Fiber, a spin-off from the University of Porto, established in INESC TEC and currently incubated at the Faculty of Medicine (FMUP), is among the 150 most promising start-ups in the field of digital health worldwide, according to a list provided by CB Insights, a North American company specialised in business analysis.

ILoF, which is being accelerated at Oxford Foundry (part of the University of Oxford), was selected from a group of about 8.000 start-ups, and is the only one with “Portuguese DNA” in this list, dominated by North American companies (77%).

CB Insights collected several data, including the investor profile, market potential, team analysis and technological novelty, in order to complete this ranking.

“It is an honour to be among the 150 most innovative and disruptive companies in the field of digital health. CB Insights’ list is often accepted as one of the most reliable sources on trends and companies, and this is another step in our mission to enable a new era of personalised medicine, thus helping the industry to develop, select and democratise personalised treatments for patients across the world”, said Luís Valente, CEO of iLoF.

ILoF has been standing out internationally, namely for the development of a patented technology for detecting nanostructures in fluids. Through a virtual platform, the spin-off digitises and stores biological profiles of patients and disease biomarkers.

In July, the spin-off signed a financing agreement with the Microsoft M12 fund and with Mayfield (for $1M), in order to explore solutions in three areas: Alzheimer’s, cancer and COVID-19. In late 2019, the spin-off received a financing of €2M, within the scope of an acceleration programme from EIT Health – the largest health consortium in the world – for disruptive health projects.
