What is your professional background with INESC TEC?

We have been collaborating for more than 15 years in different projects, mainly during the execution of projects funded by the European Commission, under FP7 and H2020 framework programmes. Both groups share common lines of research and we are familiarised with each other’s publication and work, even meeting at different conferences.

Briefly describe the main projects you have carried out in collaboration with INESC TEC.

UPM coordinated three European projects in which INESC TEC was a partner:  CumuloNimbo, CoherentPaaS and LeanBigData, all of them under the Framework Programme 7 (FP7). We have also worked together in the CloudDBAppliance European project (H2020).

What are the significant outcomes of these projects that you can highlight?

All the projects have a common factor: scalable and highly available data management technologies for big data. These technologies were developed for very different environments, like a cluster of nodes or clouds, or computer applications with large memory (4TB of RAM) and manycore architecture. The different scenarios required research on new protocols for data management, high availability and scalability. The key outcomes of the projects were the presentation of research papers at top conferences, software development and the creation of a spin-off, LeanXcale, which further explores the projects’ results.

What is your opinion on your experience working with INESC TEC?

Excellent teams both from a research point of view and as colleagues.

What is the possibility of future collaborations with INESC TEC?

We have been cooperating in the CloudDBAppliance project, which ended in January 2020. We are not working in joint projects right now, but we may participate in common project proposals for future calls of the new framework programme of the European Commission.
