The Excellence of INESC TEC

When I was invited to write the editorial for this edition of BIP, I hesitated on the subject. But after letting the idea mature, the choice became obvious: the Excellence of INESC TEC.

Twelve years ago, when I joined the INESC Porto, I quickly realised that I was part of a distinct institution. At the time, I was part of a small group dedicated to robotics, a new area in the institution. There was a clear effort to integrate us, to create synergies with other researchers, and to support the development of our activities. If we were able to improve and grow, then the institution would win. This is a remarkable approach.

Over time, and as we established partnerships with colleagues from other areas, we were able to preserve the sense of collaboration, and the desire to do better – together. An overall exceptional attitude.

At the same time, and concerning the interaction with the services that support the research activity, I always felt that they were ready to help overcome all issues. Simply excellent.

Later, as coordinator of the Centre for Robotics and Autonomous Systems (CRAS), the cooperation with other centres, the Board of Directors, and the services increased significantly. In particular, I retain the availability to collaborate and to overcome difficulties, as well as the efforts towards continuous improvement. Excellence at its finest.

But excellence also depends on each one of us. It hinges on being demanding with others, but above all, with ourselves. Excellence depends on our desire and ability to exceed ourselves. Also, on our day-to-day work. Excellence is determined by the way we observe our surroundings, identifying and seizing opportunities, and turning them into success.

Concerning the more scientific aspect of our activity – to which I am actively engaged in, as a member of the Board of Directors – much has already been done (and quite well) towards excellence. But there is still a lot to do. Namely, systematising lines of research, generating critical thinking around relevant topics, setting ambitious goals, and finding the means to put them into practice. Moreover, attracting and holding on to the most promising researchers. Get the best out of them, while helping them improve their talent, so we can preserve our Excellence. It is a huge challenge, to which I will dedicate all my energy, aiming to do more and better.

Aníbal Matos (Member of the Board of Directors)
