What is your professional background with INESC TEC?

We have collaborated with INESC TEC on the European FEEdBACk project within the framework of the Horizon 2020 programme. This collaboration followed the submission of a similar proposal that was not retained.

Briefly describe the main projects you have carried out in collaboration with INESC TEC.

The FEEdBACk project, coordinated by INEST TEC, aims to promote and deliver energy efficiency in buildings through behavioural changes. To this end, a gamification platform has been set up and is being used to motivate consumer engagement and foster energy consumption awareness. Within the framework of this project, the PVLab or EPFL is bringing its expertise in the analysis of consumption load curves and is developing applications based machine learning. Thus, it is contributing with INESC TEC and an industrial partner to the development of the energy manager feeding the gamification platform. For this project, INESC TEC was able to bring together a wide range of complementary, essential to achieve its objectives. For the demonstration of the latter, three demonstration sites in Porto, Barcelona and LIppe(Germany) have been selected for the implementation and performance evaluation.

What are the significant outcomes of these projects that you can highlight?

All project elements were successfully implemented and demo activities just started before the COVID pandemic disrupted the evaluation of the methodology and gamification platform. While the assessment of the energy saving will probably be difficult in the present situation the various apps, games and IT platforms are running and can be adapted (as it is currently the case) to other contexts or consumer populations.

What is your opinion on your experience working with INESC TEC?

Working with INESC TEC and all other partners of the FEEdBACk consortium has be enriching experience. The high level of multidisciplinarity of the project fostered many valuable discussions and exchanges. We also benefited greatly from INESC TEC expertise in energy management.

What is the possibility of future collaborations with INESC TEC?

Altough the FEEdBACk project is still ongoing with a few challenges ahead, we are looking forward to collaborating again with INESC TEC on projects related to energy management in buildings but also on the integration of renewables in energy systems.
