Joana Paiva and Daniel Vasconcelos

In 2016, Joana Paiva was doing a PhD in physics while working with optical fibres. This was when iLoF – intelligent lab on fibre – was born. With the support of the Technology Licensing Office, her idea grew to become what it is today: an internationally awarded start-up, which aims to provide an alternative method to support clinical trials in different diseases. In the month we celebrated world intellectual property day, we spoke to Joana and Daniel from the Licensing Office to understand how an idea reaches the market – and the underlying challenges of this process.
