Explain your experience since leaving INESC TEC
After leaving INESC TEC, I was at COPELABS (Association for the Research and Development of Cognition and People-centric Computing) between 2011 and 2012 in Lisbon, until I defended my PhD thesis by MAP-i in 2014 at the University of Minho. In 2013, I returned to Brazil as a Professor and Researcher at the Institute of Informatics (INF) of the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), working on the supervision of undergraduate students in research, master and PhD students in the Postgraduate Programme in Computer Science (PPGCC).
UFG was created in 1960 and has currently more than 34 000 students distributed among the 156 degree courses and 78 stricto sensu postgraduate courses among masters, PhDs and professional masters. The Institute of Informatics has 75 professors and about 1 300 students distributed in masters and PhD courses in Computer Science and in degree courses in Computer Science, Software Engineering and Information Systems.
Between 2016 and 2018 I was a peer-elected representative from the area of Exact and Earth Sciences at the Advisory Board of FUNAPE (Research Support Foundation). Since 2013, I’ve been a member of SBC (Brazilian Computer Society), Coordinator and collaborator of RD&I projects that are funded by CNPq (Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development), FAPEG (Foundation for Research Support of Goiás State), RNP (National Network on Teaching and Research) and the EU-BR consortium. Since 2017, I’ve been Assistant Coordinator of the GT-SOFTWAY4IoT project (SOFTware-defined gateWAY and fog computing for IoT (Internet of Things)), which is funded by RNP.
Currently, and as a member of the LABORAtory’s (Computer Networks and Distributed Systems) research group, I’m mostly involved in the broad area of research lines in Computer Networks: Wireless Networks and Sensors, Routing protocols, Multi-hop routing, Opportunistic Routing, Delay Tolerant Networks, Energy Efficiency, Green Computing, Cloud / Fog Computing, Smart Cities and Campus, Internet of Things (IoT), Software Defined Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualisation (NFV), Software Defined Radio (SDR) and Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
Currently, (since February of 2019) I am a Guest Researcher (Postdoctoral sabbatical leave) at Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS, being involved in the Connected Things Team in Software Defined Gateway for Internet of Things (IoT).
In your opinion how did your time at INESC TEC help you in your new role?
INESC TEC is a highly qualified research centre, being a benchmark in Portugal and in the world. Its organisation model and its structuring of the different areas of knowledge is of great value. The proximity of INESC TEC to the University of Porto, which is also a reference institution at a global level, is very important for the growth and training of human resources. INESC TEC offers all the conditions so that students and researchers can do their work in the best way possible. My experience was quite positive, because in addition to all the necessary conditions for my PhD, I learned the procedures of an organised institute that is constantly seeking for excellence. I’ve always taken this experience with me and I communicate it to everyone I talk to.
In your opinion, how has INESC TEC changed since you left?
For what I’ve been following, INESC TEC has grown even more and restructured the areas and the research centres, always seeking for excellence.
