Once again, INESC TEC took science to the paediatrics ward at IPO Porto, with the initiative “A Luz no Dia-a-Dia”. This initiative took place last month and allowed to introduce children and teenagers to the “world” of light and optics.
During the session, the children explored common phenomena in a dynamic and engaging way, getting in touch with basic concepts like speed of light and how it interacts with different materials, as well as colour formation – using prisms, lenses, lighting, UV and infrareds.
The activity showed how light travels through fibre optics and how different colours are perceived and combined, e.g., rainbow.
In addition, the participants tested how light travels through magnifying glasses, Fresnel lenses and diffraction glasses, and learned how to move lenses and lasers to better understand the science behind vision.
Diana Guimarães, INESC TEC researcher in applied photonics and member of the Technical Committee for Social Responsibility, led this activity, with the support by the Department of Physics of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (namely equipment needed to make this a more dynamic and practical experience”.
This was the third session within the scope of the “Taking Science to IPO Porto”, a partnership between INESC TEC and IPO Porto.
