INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM) supported AppGeneration in the development of the Tennis Tracking AI application. This tool helps tennis players obtain more value from their matches, in order to improve their performance; the app is a result of the Tennis Video Sports AI project.
In a society fighting against inactivity, it becomes more and more relevant to raise awareness of the importance of sports. In this sense, people no longer consider tennis an elitist sport, since it is available to a broader range of participants, who can play it in doubles, individually or even by themselves.
“We want to bring intelligence to this sport, by means of an automatic analysis based on videos that the players can make with their mobile phones. We believe that, in the near future, we will be able to have countless quantities of tips on the quality and type of game played by each tennis player, just by analysing their images”, said Eduardo Carqueja, CEO of AppGeneration. “There are countless challenges to overcome, and several elements to evolve, in an application that combines image processing algorithms, computer vision and machine learning. Concerning this first version, we tried to build a solid base, taking advantage of the existing know-how at the institutions, but new features are already being prepared”, added Pedro Carvalho, project manager and researcher at CTM.
The Norte’s Regional Operational Programme, Portugal 2020 and the European Union – through the European Regional Development Fund – are the entities funding the Tennis Video Sports AI project.
The pilot version of the application is already available for download on the App Store.
