INESC TEC article among the most cited articles in the scientific journal PLOS ONE

An INESC TEC paper in the area of medical image analysis is among the 10% most cited papers in the scientific journal PLOS One of 2017. With the participation of researchers from the Centre for Biomedical Engineering Research (C-BER) and the Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM), the paper describes a method for automatic classification of histology images of breast tissue biopsy into four classes: normal tissue, with benign lesions, with carcinoma in situ or invasive carcinoma.

The research, which was carried out by Teresa Araújo, Guilherme Aresta, Eduardo Meca Castro, José Rouco (at the time, a researcher of INESC TEC), Aurélio Campilho and three authors from i3S (INEB/Ipatimup), António Polónia, Carolina Eloy and Paulo Aguiar, aims at developing a system capable of supporting the diagnosis, thus reducing the costs and increasing the efficiency of breast cancer diagnosis.

It should be noted that the method that gave rise to the paper had already been included in the top-3 of the challenge of BIOIMAGING 2015 – 4TH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM IN APPLIED BIOIMAGING.

PLOS ONE is a scientific journal, with free access, aiming at communicating original research that contributes to the enrichment of academic knowledge in the areas of natural sciences, medical research, engineering and social and human sciences.

The researchers mentioned in this news piece are associated with INESC TEC and UP-FEUP.
