On October 4, INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM) co-organised the Workshop on Interpretability of Machine Learning in Medical Image Computing (iMIMIC), focused on the interpretability of artificial intelligence algorithms. This initiative took place within the scope of the MICCAI 2020, one of the most important events about medical image and computer assisted intervention, which took place between October 4 and 8. One of the main goals of this workshop was to address the opportunities and challenges in the field of interpretability of Machine Learning systems.
Jaime Cardoso, coordinator of the CTM and lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, was one of the General Chairs of the workshop, with the support from Wilson Silva and Ricardo Cruz, both members of the same centre.
The workshop programme included keynote speeches of experts in the fields of interpretability and Machine Learning, as well as presentations of several paper submitted previously. The organising committee promoted a group discussion for brainstorming, so the participants had the opportunity to discuss some of the most important subjects of the conference.
According to Jaime Cardoso, this event “demonstrated the dynamism of this area, as well as the potential and benefits of these approaches. With more than 80 participants, we had the opportunity to talk about several applications of interpretable artificial intelligence, concerning the diagnosis and improvement of AI algorithms, and the provision of additional information to the users. There are several CTM projects exploring this question, with application in healthcare and biometrics, where the decisions’ transparency is of the upmost importance”.
