INESC TEC is the Portuguese R&D institution with the most patent applications in Europe

For the third consecutive year, INESC TEC is in the top five of national entities with the most patent applications submitted to the European Patent Office. According to data announced by the EPO, INESC TEC submitted seven patent applications in 2019.

Most of the applications focused on artificial intelligence and digital technologies, in line with the global data presented by the EPO. Last year, INESC TEC also developed solutions in the fields of medical technology, telecommunications and measurement technologies, later applying to European patents.

According to data provided by the EPO, Portuguese research institutions and universities submitted 272 patent applications last year – the highest number ever, after the 221 applications made in the previous year.

The company Delta Cafés, part of the Nabeiro group, and the University of Évora are among the top Portuguese applicants in 2019, both with 16 submissions. The Association for the Advancement of Tissue Engineering and Cell Based Technologies & Therapies (A4TEC), with 15 orders, and the Modelo-Continente Hipermercados (Sonae group), with 10 orders, are also part of the top five, which comprises INESC TEC (seven applications).

 

Patent applications at national level

The 2019 Annual Statistical Report of the Portuguese Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) shows two national applications submitted in 2019 – which, according to INESC TEC’s Technology Licensing Office (SAL), represents “a clear investment in internationalisation”.

In the national context, and according to the report, the provisional patent applications show an increase in comparison to the same period of last year (from 518 to 569), representing a significant percentage rise (59.0%) in relation to the total volume of applications.
