VISUM 2020: new edition welcomes participants from all over the world

The eighth edition of “VISUM Summer School” is already scheduled. The event is organised by INESC TEC and the Infante D. Henrique Portucalense University (UPT), and it will take place between July 6 and 10. The Summer School will feature internationally recognised speakers in the field of computer vision. This edition will introduce several new features, and take place through digital channels, thus overcoming the challenges of the current context and reaching a higher number of candidates.

The applications are now open. Professionals from academia and industry, researchers and even Master’s students and PhD candidates will be able to apply for the “VISion – Understanding and Machine intelligence – VISUM 2020” until the May 10.

The countdown to the event, taking place between July 6 and 10, is currently displayed at the summer school website – which has been inviting researchers from different countries to Porto since 2013, in order to help them improve their knowledge in the fields of computer vision and artificial intelligence. This year’s edition will maintain the usual ambition and attention to detail; the only thing that changes is the meeting point: the web.

“Given the current situation around the world, we’ve decided that it would be impossible to hold this event on-site”, said Ana Rebelo, responsible for organising the event. “However, and after seven years of successful editions, we felt that we couldn’t help but continue to provide this service to this Computer Vision and Machine Learning community. The solution was to launch the first completely digital edition, at a special price, which is available for everyone”, she concluded.

In this sense, there will be eight online classes with academic speakers from different corners of Europe: Portugal, Holland, France, Switzerland, Belgium and Denmark. Jaime Cardoso, coordinator of the Centre for Telecommunications (CTM) will represent INESC TEC on the panel.

In addition to Ana Rebelo, the INESC TEC’s researchers Luís Teixeira, Ricardo Araújo, Isabel Oliveira, Wilson Silva, Sara Oliveira, Diogo Pernes, Mafalda Falcão, João Pinto, Filipa Sequeira, Sílvia Bessa, João Teixeira, Tiago Gonçalves and Eduardo Castro (CTM) will also partake in the organisation of the event, as well as Pedro Costa and Bruno Veloso from the Centre for Biomedical Engineering Research (C-BER).

As in previous years, the participants are invited to enter a competition, organised by a team led by researcher Eduardo Castro, in collaboration with the Portuguese company Abyssal SA. The main objective is to encourage students to put into practice the knowledge acquired in classes. The winner will receive a digital voucher from Amazon, as well as free registration in the 2021 edition of VISUM.

“The whole team has been working hard to safeguard the things that differentiate us. Thus, all participants, even at a distance, will have the possibility to get their “hands dirty” through our practical classes, compete with each other, participate in a debate on “AI: More Than Human” and get to know more about the key outcomes of the national industry in these fields. Other surprises will be announced closer to the date”, added Ana Rebelo, CTM researcher.

The application form is available on the summer school website: http://visum.inesctec.pt/.

VISUM Summer School is carried out in partnership with Data Science Portugal (DSPT), the Portuguese Women in Tech Community and the National Association of Biomedical Engineering Students, as well as with the support of NILG.AI and the Portuguese Association for Pattern Recognition (APRP).

The INESC TEC researchers mentioned in this news piece are associated with INESC TEC and UP-FEUP.
