The third edition of the workshop “Explainable & Interpretable Artificial Intelligence for Biometrics” (xAI4Biometrics) took place in early January, and brought together researchers from around the world; the event was promoted within the scope of WACV 2023, one of the major and most important international conferences on computer vision, organised by IEEE/CVF.
The 2023 edition of the workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Biometrics, promoted by INESC TEC, featured two main presentations by Arun A. Ross, from the University of Michigan (U.S.A.) and Philipp Terhörst, from the University of Paderborn (Germany). Entitled “Fairness and Integrity: Detecting Altered Biometric Data” and “On the Utility of Single Pixels for Explainable Face Recognition”, the speakers’ presentations focused on detecting altered biometric data and using pixels for explainable face recognition.
The workshop also featured the presentation of five scientific papers, with the work “Human Saliency-Driven Patch-based Matching for Interpretable Post-mortem Iris Recognition” by Aidan Boyd, Daniel Moreira, Andrey Kuehlkamp, Kevin Bowyer and Adam Czajka (University of Notre Dame, U.S.A.) receiving the award for “Best Paper Presentation”.
“The xAI4Biometrics workshop, now with three editions, continues to contribute positively to state-of-the-art advancement in Explainable AI focused on Biometrics. Above all, we believe that it contributes significantly to the main goal of promoting the understanding and acceptance of the technology supporting several applications used in biometric recognition, influencing the daily lives of a growing number of people, through explainability and interpretability”, mentioned Ana Filipa Sequeira.
According to the INESC TEC researcher, there has been a significant increase in the number of papers submitted to the workshop – which go through a double blind review process, with the Program Chairs coordinating a set of almost 20 people in the review process.
The event was organised by current INESC TEC researchers: Ana Filipa Sequeira, Isabel Rio-Torto, Pedro Neto, Tiago Gonçalves and Jaime Cardoso, as well as former INESC TEC members who have embraced new challenges: João Ribeiro Pinto (Bosch Car Multimedia, Braga), Sara Oliveira and Wilson Silva (Netherlands Cancer Institute, Netherlands).
All presentations are available on the Workshop’s YouTube channel.
