There is a new degree at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto – INESC TEC is involved

The degree combines health with technology, focusing on improving healthcare professionals’ knowledge and skills in Human Biology, Clinical and Healthcare Services, Computer and Data Science.

The new degree in Digital Health and Biomedical Innovation at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto seeks to accelerate digital transformation, research and innovation in health, and build bridges between the plethora of agents in this sector – with the support of several partners, including INESC TEC.

The Faculty and INESC TEC already established the Information Management unit, but this cooperation agreement also foresees the welcoming of students to Internship units, thus exploring INESC TEC’s lab facilities and the experience of its researchers, in Computer Science and Biomedical Innovation.

Gabriel David, Vice-Chairman of the Board, mentioned that this is an increasingly sought-after area to address the current challenges of the sector and ensured that “the partnership represents a commitment to the training of professionals with multidisciplinary knowledge, who know how to take advantage of the potential of new technologies, but who also seek to address limitations and the new ethical issues they pose”.

At the end of the degree, students will be able to initiate professional careers in different sectors or entities: digital technology and health informatics companies; pharmaceutical industry; medical devices and biotechnology entities; hospitals and healthcare institutions; research and development units (e.g., INESC TEC); national and international health regulation and policy organisations.

The degree in Digital Health and Biomedical Innovation is promoted by the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, in liaison with the Faculties of Sciences and Pharmacy of the University of Porto, the Porto School of Engineering, the Porto Nursing School, and three associated laboratories – INESC TEC, i3S – Institute for Research and Innovation in Health, and RISE – Health Research Network.
