Engineers, this news is for you: a new book on programming and AI with real-world solutions

Imagine a compendium of programming concepts, numerical computation, and advanced applications that, beyond theory, demonstrates how to apply these tools to real engineering problems. That is the premise of the book MATLAB: From Fundamentals to Artificial Intelligence by researcher Filipe Azevedo.

The book takes readers on a journey from the basics of MATLAB – a programming and numerical computing environment widely used in engineering, science, and mathematics – to advanced applications like machine learning, deep learning, optimisation, signal and image processing, symbolic mathematics, and control using Simulink (a simulation and graphical modelling environment). In this sense, Filipe Azevedo has structured and made accessible the knowledge he has gathered over more than 20 years of teaching, research, and professional practice with MATLAB and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

“I wanted to create a comprehensive and practical resource that could support both students in their learning and the work of engineers, researchers, and professionals who already use AI in their daily activities. My research intersects directly with these themes, particularly in the application of AI and optimisation methods to energy systems and power grids with high levels of renewable penetration,” explained Filipe Azevedo.

Today, machine learning and AI are no longer optional skills; they have become increasingly vital to the training and professional practice of engineers. This book addresses the demands of modern engineering with multidisciplinary applications, solved exercises, and review projects. For the INESC TEC researcher, the biggest challenge was balancing accessibility with technical depth. “I addressed this through a clear sense of progression: starting with the fundamentals, explained simply and with good examples, and gradually moving on to advanced applications in machine learning, deep learning, optimisation, control, and signal and image processing. My experience shaped the way I wrote the book – always focusing on applicable methodologies and solutions with real impact.”

The book is available in English (eBook) and Portuguese (print and eBook).
