INESC TEC is accepting applications for the International Visiting Researcher Programme (IIVRP) – an initiative that gives senior researchers from universities and research organisations outside Portugal the opportunity to join INESC TEC teams for short-term stays. The goal is to accelerate knowledge exchange and build lasting research partnerships.
Since the official launch in 2022, INESC TEC’s IIVRP has welcomed 65 visiting researchers from more than 50 institutions across two dozen countries. Applications are now open until 15 May for those interested in taking part in an international mobility experience. If accepted, participants can look forward to a stay of up to three months at INESC TEC.
“This is the fifth edition of this visiting researcher programme, and the feedback we have received so far has been extremely positive. In fact, nearly nine in ten visitors said the experience fully met their expectations,” said Andreia Passos. The manager of INESC TEC’s International Relations Service issues the following challenge: “If you are looking to develop your research, expand your international network, and become part of a dynamic, excellence-driven scientific environment, visit the call announcement on our website and submit your application.”
But how does the application process work? The IIVRP prioritises senior researchers from universities and research organisations outside Portugal; however, PhD and master’s students who demonstrate outstanding research work may also be considered and are welcome to apply.
Applicants should begin by checking the list of research topics available in the call and selecting one of the 68 options; they cover the eight research domains of INESC TEC: Artificial Intelligence, Bioengineering, Communications, Computer Science and Engineering, Photonics, Power Systems, Robotics, and Systems Engineering and Management. Applications will then be assessed by a panel appointed by the Institute’s Board of Directors.
“Each topic features an INESC TEC scientific coordinator, who will also carry out an assessment to determine whether the applicant’s profile matches what is required. We typically communicate the outcome of the call six weeks after the close of the application period. Mobility processes may begin from 1 October 2026 and must conclude by 31 July 2027 at the latest. Each stay should last between one and three months,” explained Andreia Passos.
She also stated that the call includes a monthly allowance for successful applicants, as well as a one-off travel grant and workplace accident insurance.
