Nuno Faria (HASLab)
“Nuno joined INESC TEC two years ago as a researcher, after completing his master’s thesis; his work has been crucial to the AIDA project, which ends in June 2023. Nuno is the first author and main contributor to two papers published at top conferences (SIGMOD and VLDB), in May 2023; both works summarise some of HASLab’s key contributions to this project. In addition, Nuno is always available to contribute with his knowledge, and shows significant commitment to collaborate in several other research and development activities – which is why he is also an ‘incredible member’ of our team”.

You’ve been working on the AIDA project. What are the main activities you have developed?
My work focuses on researching data management solutions, developing and deploying software.
You recently published two papers at the SIGMOD and VLDB conferences. What was the scope of the research presented and what were the main conclusions?
Regarding the SIGMOD conference, the paper focused on ways to reduce the impact of transactional conflicts on databases. As to the VLDB, the paper presented focused on the execution of operational and analytical loads concurrently in the same system, with high performance.
Which aspects of your job do you enjoy the most?
The freedom to explore and develop interesting solutions.
How do you comment on this nomination?
I’m very grateful.
Manuel Ricardo, Filipe B. Teixeira, Joana Tavares, Maria Teresa Andrade and Pedro Neto (CTM)
“The CTM coordinators would like to nominate the organising committee of the Open Day CTM 2023, featuring the researchers Manuel Ricardo, Filipe Borges Teixeira, Joana Tavares, Maria Teresa Andrade and Pedro Neto. The organising committee showed remarkable commitment and dedication in organising another edition of one of the major CTM events. This was another great moment to highlight CTM’s work among companies, peers, and students, through a very complete agenda about the convergence between the telecommunications of the future and machine perception – which included a presentation by one of the key researchers in the area, a panel that discussed the topic from different perspectives, and a set of demonstrators that showcased the cutting-edge research developed at CTM. The success achieved in another edition of the CTM Open Day will certainly contribute to more partnerships with companies and other external entities, and to bring new talented members to join our research teams. Congratulations to all members of the team!”

The 2023 edition of Open Day CTM was dedicated to the theme of the convergence between the telecommunications of the future and machine perception. Why did you choose this topic?
The theme was chosen by the organising committee, in order to address a topical, cross-cutting and strategic area at CTM, promoting a synergy between ongoing project, the lines of research and the key-areas to our partners. It also provided students a medium/long-term outlook of our work, crucial to engage with them and encourage their interest in scientific research. It was a natural choice, based on both the vision and strategy of CTM, as well as on the work carried out in recent years and currently underway – within the scope of several research projects.
How did the event promote the debate on this topic and the work that INESC TEC has been developing in the area?
The event featured Mario Campolargo, Secretary of State for Digitalisation and Administrative Modernisation, and Ivan Seskar, Chief Technologist & Director of WINLAB, at Rutgers University (New York) – who provides a comprehensive view on this topic. The Open Day also featured a panel moderated by Arlindo Oliveira (INESC and IST-UL) and a demonstrators’ session, to showcase INESC TEC work thus far and the prospects for upcoming years.
What challenged you the most in organising this Open Day?
The return to face-to-face events brings challenges to the participation of companies and partners from different parts of the country. Moreover, the event was organised during a moment where many team members faced professional and personal challenges, with several other institutional actions taking place simultaneously. I would like to mention the dedication and commitment of Lídia Vilas Boas and Catarina Carvalho, which allowed us to overcome some of these challenges; they were vital to the success of this event, during the planning and implementation phases.
How do you comment on this nomination?
We would like to thank the CTM coordinators for the nomination. The Open Day CTM is a major event to emphasise the work carried out by the Centre and its researchers, particularly among our peers, companies, and students; acknowledging its success and investing in this type of event is clearly a sign of investing in the future. In addition, acknowledging the importance of organising this event is another factor that contributes to the dissemination of the work carried out at CTM, and to highlight, within the INESC TEC community, the importance of organising initiatives that disseminate the research made-in INESC TEC.
