Matthew Gough, South Africa

First, Porto. Then, INESC TEC. Matthew Gough landed in Portugal in 2017, for his first experience outside South Africa. Under the MIT Portugal program, he got to know the halls of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, and after a natural process, he joined INESC TEC in 2019. He focuses on new technologies, electrical vehicles and storage systems at the Centre for Power and Energy Systems (CPES). Here he found an good environment and a “differentiating factor”: interculturality. He wants to help “solve problems” in a “small yet diverse” country, and remain in Porto “for a long time”; the current goal is finishing his PhD. We talked to Matthew on a cloudy day – which is somehow “unnatural”, as he said. Let’s get to know him?
