Empowering creativity with Artificial Intelligence: INESC TEC part of European project that is developing said skills

It is called AI-SCRETT (AI-Supported Education for Creative Empowerment through Responsible Technology and Training) and was officially approved in March 2025; it benefits from €7.2M to develop advanced digital skills, focusing on the intersection between creativity and AI. INESC TEC is one of the partners of this project funded by the European Commission’s Digital Europe programme.

AI-SCRETT will, over the course of four years, train a new generation of professionals with digital skills, capable of driving the three major European transitions: digital, green, and social.

This project will contribute directly to the objectives of the European Union’s Digital Decade, which aims to train 20 million experts in the fields of information and communication technologies (ICT) by 2030, focusing on gender balance and digital inclusion. But it will also support the European Green Deal and the New European Bahaus, reflecting Europe’s vision for sustainability, culture and innovation.

INESC TEC will lead the design and development of the technological tools that will support the learning experience in the project’s ecosystem, while coordinating the collaboration with relevant European stakeholders (other research and innovation entities, technological platforms, European associations, and companies). The project foresees the development of an intelligent digital platform using AI to personalise learning paths, adapt content to the profiles of different users, and support professionals – including teachers and trainers – in designing educational activities.

The Institute also leads the design and development of tech tools that will contribute to the integration of recommendation systems and predictive analytics, capable of promoting more effective and engaging training – focused on real-world market and societal challenges.

“We also aim to ensure that all the technical solutions developed meet the principles of ethical and transparent AI, preserving cultural diversity,” explained Ricardo Miguéis, responsible for representing INESC TEC in Brussels through the INESC Brussels Hub, and coordinator of this project on behalf of the Institute.

With partners in Spain, Italy, Germany, Greece, Sweden, Finland, Belgium, Portugal, France, Norway, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, AI-SCRETT focuses on generating cross-border impact and establishing a new standard for AI education in Europe.

The project is led by the University of Valencia (Spain) and brings together 23 partners from 11 European countries, including research centres like INESC TEC, but also universities, SMEs, public authorities and cultural organisations.

AI-SECRETT will also develop a comprehensive educational programme – including a fully online joint master’s degree and shorter training modules – that integrates technology and creativity to address real societal challenges.

INESC TEC’s participation in AI-SECRETT reinforces the Institute’s strategic commitment to digital education and the transversal application to various sectors, e.g., cultural and creative industries, with a direct impact on Europe’s digital, green and social transitions.

The consortium features INESC TEC, University of Valencia, Universidad de Murcia, Universitat Politècnica de València, Culturalink, CINK Venturing, Inspiring Futures, Promoción de la Ciudad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria S.A. and the Generalitat Valenciana (Spain), Cognito S.R.L., Uniri, TÜV Thüringen Italia S.R.L. and the Università degli Studi Gabriele d’Annunzio (Italy), the Hochschule Wismar (Germany), THE FACTORY IKE (JOIST) (Greece), Region Värmland (Sweden) and LAUREA-AMMATTIKORKEAKOULU OY (Finland). Belgian partners include KEA European Affairs and The Lisbon Council. Portugal is represented by INESC TEC. The French partners include ESAD-GV and Relais Culture Europe (associated partner). Norway participates through NTNU – Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and Bosnia and Herzegovina through the Development Agency of the city of Prijedor (PREDA).

AI-SCRETT is not just an academic project – it is designed to be practical and meet market needs. In this sense, industrial partners like CINK Venturing, Cognito S.R.L., JOIST, and KEA European Affairs will ensure that the training content meets the real needs of the sector and innovation trends. Public institutions like the Consellería de Educación (Valencia) and the Region Värmland (Sweden) will ensure the link between learning, regional development strategies and European policy objectives.

The presence of cultural partners like ESAD-GV, Relais Culture Europe and Culturalink reinforces the importance of integrating the artistic and creative dimensions in the digital transformation. Thus, AI-SECRETT aims to show how AI can empower – not replace – human expression.
