From the laboratory to the school: INESC TEC participated in the National Forum of Clubes Ciência Viva na Escola

INESC TEC joined the National Forum of Clubes Ciência Viva na Escola (CCVnE); for two days, the Institute helped to “build the future of knowledge” alongside Clubes Ciência Viva and Centros Ciência Viva – as well as other institutions from all over the country.

Projects, debates, workshops, and sharing of experiences: this event brought together students, teachers, and scientists, gathering more than 2,000 people. The passion for science takes root early on, and that’s why we left the laboratory to show how INESC TEC research influences our society. How? We showcased the Ecovale project as a flagship for our awareness-raising work on energy poverty and energy efficiency, which we developed alongside schools. What began in Vila Nova de Famalicão and Barcelos is now expanding to other municipalities. At INESC TEC’s stand, visitors were able to test their knowledge on energy-efficient use of household appliances in an educational game.

Zenaida Mourão, INESC TEC researcher, led the parallel session “Lessons on Energy Efficiency with Ariz and Nefi: the Ecovale project,” which aimed to uncover the energy issues of cities. “Why did we lose power?” was the challenge presented; during a journey through different homes, the youngest participants had to identify the issues and find solutions.

The Forum was also an opportunity for students and teachers to explore INESC TEC research domains up close: from Artificial Intelligence and Bioengineering to Communications, Computer Science and Engineering, Photonics, Systems Engineering and Management, Robotics, and Power & Energy Systems. Curious and engaged, the young people who filled the Alfândega introduced several questions – “Do you know how to make a chatGPT?”, “What does an engineer do?” “Do you explore the ocean floor?” – but also a great deal of knowledge to share.

The initiative “Come discover the wonderful world of science and engineering,” which runs from May 7 to 9, is the answer for those who want to further explore INESC TEC research work. This open week will allow high school students to participate in activities in Energy, Robotics (Marine, Industrial, and Agricultural), and Communications. Others have already secured their place in the summer internship programme – Ciência Viva no Laboratório – to discover “How science and engineering are revolutionising healthcare”, which takes place from between July 7 and 11.

Currently, the CCVnE gathers 897 members.
