Within the scope of the 3MAPSTRACK project, INESC TEC participated in the development of an innovative platform aimed at port authorities and container terminals, capable of promoting greater port security, both nationally and internationally.
The 3MAPSTRACK project – intelligent monitoring of HAZMAT cargo – developed an innovative platform to support the integrated monitoring and control of port operations related to the movement of vehicles and dangerous cargo containers. According to Lino Oliveira, researcher at INESC TEC and head the project, this is possible through “the use of automated tools that analyse, process and correlate sensory information with video images captured via security cameras and with the available electronic port data”.
This solution will make it possible to detect errors and failures in moving cargo more quickly, improving the port’s safety in the movement of said dangerous cargo, and promoting a greater predictability in future cargo parking strategies – according to the ports’ general security plan.
More specifically, the result of this project is an intelligent software solution capable of monitoring the movement of vehicles and dangerous cargo containers in real time: from their arrival, parking and loading on the ship (and vice-versa), to the jurisdiction process of port authorities. Moreover, this platform is based on two modules: Digital Tracking and Digital Twin, which interact with the terminal’s operating system and with the electronic port data system. “This intelligent solution aims to be a fundamental asset for port security”, he added.
The technology was developed by INESC TEC, whose main role was the R&D of the Digital Twin module, and by the company 3Maps, which developed the basic infrastructure, interoperability mechanisms and Digital Tracking.
The project was presented during the last edition of Business2Sea, which took place in November 2021; this event aimed at promoting relations between public authorities, companies, universities and R&D centres and associations – both national and foreign – dedicated to different fields of the sea economy.
The 3MAPSTRACK project, with an allocated budget of €380K, started in January 2020 and ended in December 2021.
