INESC TEC researchers among the world’s best in four scientific areas

There are 11 INESC TEC researchers among the most cited scientists worldwide, according to the World’s Top 2% Scientists list: Gaspar Rego, Jaime Cardoso, João Cardoso, João Catalão, João Gama, João Peças Lopes, José Luís Santos, Manuel Matos, Orlando Frazão, Ricardo Jorge Bessa and Vladimiro Miranda. The ranking, considered the most prestigious in the world, was published by Stanford University (U.S.A.), together with the Dutch editorial Elsevier BV, considering more than 180.000 researchers, distributed over 22 scientific domains and 176 subdomains.

The list highlights the scientific merit of 11 INESC TEC researchers, placing them among the best 2% in the world in their respective areas, namely: Energy (João Catalão, João Peças Lopes, Manuel Matos, Ricardo Jorge Bessa and Vladimiro Miranda), Optoelectronics and Photonics (Gaspar Rego, José Luís Santos and Orlando Frazão), Artificial Intelligence and Image Processing (Jaime Cardoso and João Gama) and Computer Hardware and Architecture (João Cardoso).

In the energy sub-domain, INESC TEC researchers are among the top 2500 most cited worldwide, out of a total of almost 5000 experts. In the field of Optoelectronics and Photonics, the three INESC TEC researchers are among the first 1100, in a total of 2345. Regarding Artificial Intelligence and Image Processing, INESC TEC researchers are among the 5400 acknowledged worldwide. Concerning Computer Hardware and Architecture, João Cardoso was the only Portuguese recognised, among the 380 researchers listed worldwide.

The study, updated and released in October, is divided into two distinct categories: career-long impact and last-year impact. The ranking was supported by Scopus, an international online database of scientific articles and respective citations for academic publications, using data from more than eight million scientists considered active worldwide.

The World’s Top 2% Scientists list is developed by a group of experts led by John Ioannidis (Stanford University), joined by Jeroen Baas (Elsevier BV) and Kevin W. Boyack (SciTech Strategies) and provides standardised citation information, h-index and co-authored adjusted hm-index, among others. All publications up to 2020 include career-related data and information about the last year. The first version was published in 2019, with the purpose of creating a database of more than 100.000 scientists available to the public, in order to allow the reproduction of the calculations of the indicators and address abusive use. Since then, the publication is updated every year.
