International event on the digitalisation of the health sector – INESC TEC participated and presented technological solutions

The HIMSS23 European Health Conference & Exhibition event brought the European healthcare ecosystem to Lisbon, promoting the presentation of technological solutions, as well as the debate around the digitalisation of the health sector and the main challenges. The event took place between June 7 and 9, with INESC TEC among the participants

Under the motto “Health that Connects and Tech that Cares”, HIMMS addressed the future of healthcare and how technology can support the sector, improving precision health. The event, which is part of one of the largest medical technology exhibitions in the world, brought together the European health care community, including representatives of the industry, health care professionals, members of the scientific and technological community, entrepreneurs, and investors.

INESC TEC participated in the 2023 edition – in particular, in the conference programme and in the exhibition area. Regarding the participation in sessions, Hugo Paredes, researcher at INESC TEC, was part of a panel entitled – “ChatGPT, the Metaverse and Everything!”, which aimed to reflect on the potential application of virtual technologies to the medical area; he had the opportunity to talk about the work carried out within the scope of the European project VR2Care.

Concerning the exhibition, INESC TEC joined InSignals NeuroTech – a spin-off of the Institute – to present some of the solutions for the healthcare sector under development, e.g., iHandU – a technology that allows monitoring Parkinson’s patients outside the clinical environment.

“HIMSS is one of the largest medical technology events; since this year’s edition took place in Portugal, it was an excellent opportunity to share INESC TEC work, and how the Institute contributes in terms of healthcare technologies. We had the possibility of exploring new business opportunities, fundamentally international, which we seek to advance soon”, mentioned Carlos Ferreira. According to the Business Developer of INESC TEC TEC4Health, the Institute “is always perceived as a particularly relevant partner, for its track record in terms of technology transfer, and for endeavours in deep tech research”.

The HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition, promoted by HIMSS – Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, is an annual event that usually brings together more than 30.000 participants. In addition to networking moments, the event includes educational sessions and a showcase of healthcare technologies. The 2024 edition will take place in Rome, Italy, in late May.
