New edition of PhD Bytes highlighted research and innovation in Computer Science

The second edition of PhD Bytes challenged PhD students to present their research in computer science in a clear, creative and accessible way. The initiative took place on 3 December at INESC TEC’s hub in the University of Minho and featured the participation of three PhD students, who presented their projects through short, informal pitches.

The event aims to encourage effective science communication, introduce different lines of research and promote interdisciplinary dialogue among researchers in the field of high-assurance software.

First place was awarded to Diogo Ribeiro, a PhD student in the field of information security, who presented a project focused on non-authoritative digital identification systems, an alternative to traditional centralised models for issuing identity documents. Among the various future challenges are the detection and resolution of duplicate records, a problem inherent to the collection of data from multiple sources.

Bruno Pereira, a PhD student in distributed systems, won the second place for his work on ransomware, one of the most prevailing cyberattacks today, with new incidents occurring every 19 seconds. Using the analogy of a personal library, the student explained how these attacks encrypt victims’ files and demand a ransom for their recovery. The work focuses on the study of current detection and data recovery mechanisms, towards developing a new protection system capable of ensuring full data integrity while minimising the impacts of this type of attack.

Third place was awarded to André Gonçalves, also a PhD student in the field of distributed systems, who presented a project proposing the development of an adaptive framework capable of self-adjusting to dynamic environments by automatically selecting the most suitable algorithmic configuration for the system’s conditions.

This initiative aims to strengthen young researchers’ ability to communicate science effectively, reflect on the impact of their contributions and share their journey with their peers.

The researchers mentioned in this news piece are associated with INESC TEC and UMinho.
