The Ordem dos Engenheiros honoured the career of researcher Fernando Maciel Barbosa

Fernando Maciel Barbosa, INESC TEC researcher in the field of Power and Energy Systems, was honoured before close to 700 engineers, due to his career and accomplishments in engineering. Every year, the Ordem dos Engenheiros celebrates the Regional Engineer’s Day as a way of valuing the work of professionals in the sector for the development of the country and the region; the INESC TEC researchers was one of the people acknowledged in this year’s edition.

The Ordem dos Engenheiros acknowledged the best in the field of engineering on October 26, at the Suggia Room (Casa da Música). Fernando Maciel Barbosa was one of the three engineers honoured this year, due to his professional career, dedication to the sector and significant contributions throughout his career.

The researcher is especially grateful for the recognition, emphasising that it is “quite rewarding to know that my 47-year career is valued”.

Fernando Maciel Barbosa holds a degree in Electrical Engineering by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (1972); in the same year, he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering of the same Faculty as a lecturer. The researcher also stated that “going to the UMIST – University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology to obtain his M.Sc. (1976) and PhD (1979) was quite important, at a time when research in the area of electrical engineering in Portuguese universities was practically non-existent.”

He took office as a full professor in 1989 and taught several courses at European universities. His career includes more than 200 scientific publications, a 47-year track record at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, and the connection to several institutions – where he held managerial or advisory positions, namely the collaboration in several Management bodies of the Ordem dos Engenheiros. “I was part of the Admission and Qualification Council and participated in the start of the evaluation of Engineering courses, having chaired many evaluation committees of Electrical Engineering courses. Later, I joined the committees for the attribution of the EURACE Quality seal”, he recalled.

Fernando Maciel Barbosa received the award from the President of the Ordem dos Engenheiros, Fernando de Almeida Santos. Bento Aires, President of the Ordem dos Engenheiros – Região Norte, José Pedro Aguiar Branco, resident of the Assembly of the Republic, and Filipe Araújo, Vice-President of the Porto Chamber, also attended the event.
