Students from anywhere in the world who are interested in pursuing their PhD at one of INESC TEC’s research Centres can – from July 24 until early September – submit their expression of interest.
INESC TEC provides unique conditions for PhD students, with a dynamic environment where cutting-edge technological advances and real-world applications converge. Carrying out a PhD at INESC TEC not only improves the academic path, but also equips researchers with the skills and experience vital to address real-world challenges and have a significant impact in their areas.
There’s a period of submission of expressions of interest for national and international students who wish to carry out their PhD at the Institute. At this stage, applicants must identify their research interests, so INESC TEC can assess how they connect to the Institute’s researchers and find the best supervisor available; these are INESC TEC main scientific domains: Artificial Intelligence, Bioengineering, Communications, Computer Science and Engineering, Photonics, Power Systems, Robotics, and Systems Engineering and Management.
“Through this process, we seek a balance between the interests of the candidates and our research activities; we’ll find an expert who shares the same interests and holds complementary knowledge, more easily ensuring a harmonious collaboration and maximising the potential for innovative and impactful research results – for both the PhD student and the supervisor”, said Aníbal Matos.
According to the member of the Board of Directors at INESC TEC, a panel of experts will assess all expressions of interest to identify the potential connection between the skills of our team of researchers and the research interests, academic background and motivation of the PhD candidates. After this process, students will have the opportunity to interact with these potential supervisors to confirm if it’s possible to meet this balance and fulfil expectations.
As an institution that operates at the interface between the academia and the business sectors, solving practical problems, addressing the needs of industry and bringing society closer, INESC TEC is the ideal place to pursue a more practical and research-oriented approach in Portugal, presenting practical challenges to PhD candidates and ensuring that their research has direct applications in the field.
The institution’s ties with industry provide access to cutting-edge technologies, great supervision and a vital network of contacts. With state-of-the-art facilities, the researchers are dedicated to high-impact and industry-centred research, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration. Additionally, PhD candidates will benefit from technology transfer opportunities, more easily translating their research into tangible solutions.
“PhD students at INESC TEC have a range of opportunities, including access to our advanced laboratories’ infrastructures, the possibility of collaborating with researchers from other scientific fields, or participating in training sessions and workshops”, he explained, emphasising that: “we also ensure financial support, which includes the payment of tuition fees to students enrolled in Portuguese Higher Education Institutions, health insurance and access to a performance award, acknowledging and rewarding students for their academic results, productivity and contributions to research projects”.
The period for submitting expressions of interest ends on September 26. Applications can be submitted through the INESC TEC website here. Here you can find detailed information about this opportunity.
