The third issue of the INESC TEC Science & Society magazine, dedicated to the theme “Beyond 5G Communications”, is now available. This edition, featuring 21 authors and 12 articles, concurs with the end of the 5G auction in Portugal, thus promoting the debate about the impact of this technology on different sectors.
“This issue focuses on 5G, a topical subject. It features INESC TEC experts and invited authors who provide a broad perspective on this topic”, mentioned Artur Pimenta Alves, coordinator of the magazine.
Manuel Ricardo, Rui Campos and Luís Pessoa, editors of the Special Theme, stated that the magazine’s subject is “topical, socially relevant, and crucial to Portugal”. “Topical because it concurs with the end of the 5G auction in Portugal, and the installation of 5G by telecommunication companies. It is also relevant because it explores different points of view on this theme among several sectors: industry, healthcare, agriculture, smart cities, etc. Finally, it is crucial to the country, because of the implementation of the Recovery and Resiliency Plan (PRR) and the discussion around the Portugal 2030 programme, focusing on digital and energy transition – with 5G as one of the main pillars”, explained the researchers.
In addition to the articles dedicated to topic “Beyond 5G Communications”, the third edition of the magazine also includes a section on other themes, with emphasis on the evolution of the price of electricity in the Iberian electricity market. “Given the importance of increasing electricity prices today, we invited our researchers to write an article that explains how the Iberian energy market works and how prices are set”, added Artur Pimenta Alves.
It’s important to mention that this magazine was created to disseminate science among society and contribute to the debate on emerging issues. The Science & Society features two issues per year and is available online – in Portuguese and in English. The next edition of the publication will be dedicated to the topic “Agro-Food and Forest”.
