The students, with different curricula, paths, and academic degrees, are working hard and with dedication on different projects. Carlos Ferreira, Cristiano Patrício, Joana Rocha and Maria Leite are the INESC TEC researchers acknowledged by Huawei, within the scope of the second edition of the Grants Programme. The winners received €5K to support their work.
Carlos Ferreira is attending the fourth year of the Doctoral Program in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, and holds the position of Business Developer of TEC4Health, at INESC TEC. In his thesis, he is exploring ways of collaboration between radiologists and automatic tools to improve the diagnosis and management of lung cancer; although he will not use the grant in this project, he believes it will be a vital help. “The grant will be allocated to professional training activities, allowing me to acquire management and business skills. I feel particularly grateful for the recognition of my extracurricular merit”, he added.
Joana Rocha is also in the same doctoral program, and her research work is part of the Transparent Artificial Medical Intelligence (TAMI) project, which aims to make medical diagnosis clearer and more reliable through Artificial Intelligence.
“The grant will be an excellent way to promote the scientific dissemination of my work, and to fund my participation in conferences, now that I am approaching the final stretch. It’s wonderful to know that my work and effort are acknowledged. I think that this type of initiative is very important to motivate students and researchers to continue their careers – and, above all, to value national talent”, she said.
Cristiano Patrício, a PhD student in Computer Engineering at the University of Beira Interior, is exploring solutions based on Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) algorithms to support the diagnosis of diseases through the analysis of medical images. This grant will enable the acquisition of more computational resources, in order to accelerate the processing of data and results. Cristiano is proud and admits that, at a professional level, there’s added motivation: “receiving this grant adds more responsibility, setting the bar even higher”.
The second edition of the Huawei Portugal Grants Programme gathered a total of 5306 applications from students all over Portugal – about 80% more than the number of applicants in the first edition of this initiative, in 2021/2022. The Huawei Grants Programme represents an annual investment of €250K.
