INESC TEC researcher published a book that explores technology applied to health

He ventured into writing in 2008, with the first technical book on mobile development in Portugal – and he never stopped. Ricardo Queirós is a researcher at INESC TEC, professor at the School of Media Arts and Design of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto (ESMAD-P.Porto), and he just published 12th book.

After exploring gamification (in the previous book) – focusing on the application in organisations – as a tool to leverage business processes, and reflecting the work he has carried out in the “search for new methodologies to improve the teaching-learning process of programming”, “Digital Health – Development of Solutions with Node-RED” is a book that focuses on an emerging area.

According to Ricardo Queirós, this work “aims to promote the importance of digital health and highlight the urgent need to train professionals who combine skills from the healthcare and technology domains,” and it stems from his teaching experience over recent years.

“It all started when I was teaching two subjects: ‘Introduction to Digital Health Programming’, in the Digital Health course, at the School of Health, and ‘Ubiquitous Platforms’, in the master’s degree in Systems and Interactive Media, at the School of Media Arts and Design. Both focus on the use of technology applied to health,” he recalled. The enthusiasm of the students, combined with the growing interest of the researcher, led Ricardo to realise “that it made perfect sense to write a book that would unite both fields”. Especially since “in Portugal, few (or no) books focus on this topic, and I felt that there was a gap to be addressed,” he stated.

The researcher mentioned that the book is organised into two parts: the first, more conceptual, “focuses on the evolution, structure and main trends of digital health, with an emphasis on mobile health (fitness, nutrition, medication management, mental health, sleep, sexual health, etc.).” The second, more practical, “presents the Node-RED platform, which allows the reader, even without programming experience, to create health applications in a visual environment.” “Both parts are accessible to people without prior knowledge, being an introductory book without technical needs”, he said.

The book is now available and can be purchased in bookstores.

The INESC TEC researcher mentioned in this news piece is associated with ESMAD-P.Porto.
