Last month, INESC TEC’s Centre for Power and Energy Systems (CPES) signed a contract with Endesa, a multinational in the energy sector, for a large and complex study – the Pego-Comp-Sinc project – with Associate Director João Peças Lopes as coordinator.
Several CPES researchers are part of this project, which aims to identify and evaluate the technical benefits from the potential conversion of the Pego Thermoelectric Power Plant to operate as synchronous condenser providing ancillary services to the Iberian electrical system, following the shutdown of this power station as a coal-fired power plant.
The project focuses on analysing how the future use of synchronous machines at the Pego Thermoelectric Power Station (on synchronous compensation mode) will influence the frequency and transient stability while providing inertia and voltage control, particularly after said shut down. In this sense, the stability of the network may improve during the period comprising 2025, 2030, 2035 and following years, considering the ultimate goal of increasing the integration volume of energy generated from renewable sources.
