INESC TEC is once again taking part in the “Scientific Occupation of Young People During the Holidays” (OCJF) initiative, organised by Ciência Viva. From 20 to 24 July, the Institute will open its doors to high-school students with an interest in industrial engineering and management, robotics, or artificial intelligence. Registration is now open here and places are limited to six participants.
This year’s internship theme is “Nothing is lost, everything is transformed: how can technology help with sustainability?”. The challenge put to students is, first and foremost, to think about what happens to old clothes, household appliances that stop working, or even the organic waste we discard every day.
What if we told students that technology can help give a new lease of life to all these materials, and that INESC TEC already has the answer?
In a global context marked by growing challenges such as climate change, resource scarcity, and increased waste production, sustainability and the transition to circular economy models have become urgent priorities. Technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, has been playing an increasingly significant role in addressing these challenges, opening new possibilities to optimise processes, reducing waste, and creating more efficient and responsible solutions.
This internship offers a practical introduction to the topic, challenging students to explore how technology can contribute to a more sustainable, people-centred society. Over the course of an intensive week, students will have the opportunity to reflect on real everyday problems. At the end, they will have the chance to develop an innovative business proposal, to be presented to a panel of INESC TEC researchers. The proposal must address the question “how can technology be used to create sustainable businesses?”.
The internship runs from 20 to 24 July, between 09:30 and 17:30, with lunch provided.
There’s something new at this year’s Ciência Viva Internships – The Geração Ciência Award
The OCJF brings something new this year. All secondary school students who take part in a scientific and technological internship lasting a minimum of one week are eligible for the Geração Ciência Awards.
“This is a distinction promoted by Ciência Viva – the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture, which recognises the outstanding merit of work carried out during internships. In the case of Medical and Health Sciences, the Award results from a collaboration between Ciência Viva and the ATG – GABBA PhD Alumni Association.”, as stated in the communication released by Ciência Viva.
Therefore, students taking part in the INESC TEC internship are eligible to apply for these new awards.
