All paths lead to INESC TEC: applications are open for an international mobility initiative

For a period of up to three months, researchers – including master’s degree and PhD students – affiliated with universities or other research organisations outside Portugal, will have the opportunity to carry out research activities at INESC TEC. The initiative is called International Visiting Researcher Programme; it is already in the third edition, and applications are open until May 15.

A total of 28 people from different regions: Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Austria, Canada, Denmark, the United States of America, India, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. We are talking about the participants of the 2022 and 2023 editions of INESC TEC International Visiting Researcher Programme. This is an initiative that grants researchers the opportunity to carry out research activities at INESC TEC, up to a maximum period of three months, on topics related to the scientific domains of the Institution.

“Visiting researchers will have the opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary environment, with top experts in research areas of mutual interest, while expanding their professional network”, said Andreia Passos. According to the Manager of INESC TEC International Relations Service, visiting researchers will receive financial support during their stay in Portugal and will have access to advanced research facilities.

“The feedback we have received from the participants in the 2022 and 2023 editions – some of them who are still carrying out their activities – has been quite positive, and with tangible results to report (like scientific publications, or memoranda of understanding). This is initiative, albeit during a short period, can be an excellent contribution to leverage or consolidate lasting institutional collaborations and promote knowledge sharing in favour of scientific and technological advancement”, stated Andreia Passos. “Researchers, both those who visit and those who host, become agents of internationalisation of their institutions”, she added.

In the 2024 edition, there are 76 research topics available, covering Artificial Intelligence, Bioengineering, Communications, Computer Science and Engineering, Power Systems, Systems Engineering and Management, and Robotics. “This year, we have significantly increased the number of research topics and we hope to be able to fund more participants. In 2022, we funded 10 visiting researchers and, in 2023, 18; this year, we hope to expand the possibilities of collaboration with researchers from other countries”, mentioned Vera Pinto, who coordinates the Mobility area of the International Relations Service.

People can apply until May 15 (23:59 UTC+1), 2024. More information about this opportunity is available on the INESC TEC website.
