Europe discusses collaboration opportunities in high-frequency wireless communications

Smart propagation environments, improvements in signal processing for the sixth generation of mobile communications, and 6G-centred network and location developments were some of the topics discussed at an event organised by the European projects TERRAMETA (coordinated by INESC TEC), 6G-SHINE and TIMES, in collaboration with RESTART-IN – an Italian PRR.

The goal was to participate in an event to disseminate the RESTART-IN project; however – and benefiting from the presence of several entities involved in the promotion of 6G-related projects – the participants seized the opportunity and organised, in record time, a workshop to present not only the work in progress within their respective projects, but also to discuss and explore possibilities for collaboration. In this case, the promoters of the European projects TERRAMETA, 6G-SHINE and TIMES.

“This opportunity stemmed from the organisation of the workshop ‘RESTART Plenary Dissemination’, the kick-off event of RESTART – RESearch and innovation on future Telecommunications systems and networks, to make Italy more smart, an Italian PRR programme with €118M. Several participants in this Programme are also involved in the European projects TIMES and 6G-SHINE. Hence, and benefiting from the presence of a large audience in Bologna (Italy), those involved decided to organise this event, promoted by the three European projects and the RESTART-IN initiative”, said Luís Pessoa, INESC TEC researcher and coordinator of the TERRAMETA project.

In addition to present the work they are developing within these projects, focusing on smart propagation environments, improvements in signal processing, and network and location developments, the teams sought to establish collaboration actions, identifying opportunities to cooperate in the high-frequency wireless communications (THz) sector. “We have a sense of accomplishment, because we managed to create new lines of cooperation between the participating projects”, explained Luís Pessoa, stating that a new event is already planned – this time in June, as part of the EuCNC 2024 conference, which will take place in Antwerp, Belgium.

This was not the first collaboration experience between the consortia of the three European projects TERRAMETA, 6G-SHINE and TIMES: in November 2023, they organised a session on the challenges posed to short-range communications in environments of extreme propagation, during the IEEE CSCN 2023 Conference.

The TERRAMETA project started in early 2023, focusing on researching innovative technologies for the sixth generation (6G) of mobile communications, supporting the digital transition process of the European business ecosystem through the demonstration of THz reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS).

The researcher mentioned in this news piece is associated with INESC TEC and UP-FEUP.
