INESC TEC and FEUP contribute to project in the field of immersive audio

INESC TEC is part of the consortium of the CHIC project – Cooperative Holistic View on Internet and Content, which aims to identify and study the factors that contribute to the audio-visual focus of viewers.

More specifically, the C2 activity of the CHIC project resorted to the application of iris location technology, in order to identify points of interest in animated visual representations, with multiple and different audio elements.

In addition, the project resorted to audio as an anchor to refine the users’ focus, which is significantly difficult in environments with 360º videos and virtual reality.

The results of this study will have an impact on the development of immersive platforms and, consequently, on strategies to be used in sound design focusing on leading viewers to a given narrative, in non-linear and immersive environments, intentionally and subliminally.

It is worth mentioning that the work developed within the scope of activity C2 led to a scientific article, published in the journal Personal and Ubiquitous Computing.

From the results achieved, it is important to point out those that highlight the importance of balancing sensory modalities and emotional correspondence, critical aspects in sound design in non-linear and immersive media. This way, it will be possible to design new strategies for the sound design practices of the future.

Researchers Gilberto Bernardes and Rui Penha were part of the team of INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM). Post-doctoral student Inês Salselas represented FEUP in this consortium.

The INESC TEC researchers mentioned in this news piece are associated with INESC TEC and UP-FEUP.
