INESC TEC develops the 1st catalogue of Energy Patterns for mobile applications

The longevity of batteries in mobile devices is a problem for the majority of users. The interaction of users with these devices is often jeopardised by the constant concern that the battery might run out. However, this problem may cease to exist. The researchers of INESC TEC’s High-Assurance Software Laboratory (HASLab) developed the first catalogue of energy patterns, focusing on the energy efficiency of the mobile applications, which aims at improving the power consumption in computing systems.

The project GreenSoftware Lab (GSL), which received a funding of over EUR 150 000 from the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), provides, among other results, an online free catalogue about energy patterns: https://tqrg.github.io/energy-patterns/#/

“This catalogue documents several techniques for designing mobile applications in order to improve their energy efficiency, that is, to reduce the battery consumption of a mobile application”, explains Luís Cruz, researcher of HASLab.

The catalogue can work as a tool so that younger development teams don’t need to resort to specialised collaborators in order to improve the performance of their mobile applications. In addition to this, the catalogue of patterns acts as a starting point for programmers or students who want to expand their technical skills in the energy efficiency area.

The use of design patterns to reuse efficient solutions in the software development is a frequent technique in this area.

“The long-term goal is to increase the longevity of batteries in mobile devices and to allow their users to be able to interact with them without having to worry about the battery level,” concludes the researcher.

The following researchers were part of the team that developed this catalogue: Luís Cruz and Rui Maranhão.

The researchers mentioned in this news piece are associated with INESC TEC, INESC-ID and Instituto Superior Técnico (IST).
