The Portuguese Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) celebrated the 50th anniversary, with INESC TEC taking part in the honouring conference organised to observe this occasion. Daniel Vasconcelos, Head of INESC TEC’s Technology Transfer Office, joined a panel discussion entitled Parcerias que criam valor: uma agenda para o futuro.
The panel also featured Maria Oliveira, Vice-President of the Board of Directors of the Agency for Research and Innovation (AI2); Rita Rocha, from InnoValue – Innovation and Value Creation in Health at NOVA Medical School; and Miguel d’Aguiar, Executive Director of Startup Portugal.
The discussion focused primarily on what is still needed, and which steps are necessary to turn industrial property rights into tangible benefits for society. “We discussed good practices in the valorisation of industrial property rights, including laying the groundwork at universities through entrepreneurship training, stepping up support for proof-of-concept projects and testing in real-world environments, reviewing incentives and researcher assessment systems, and incorporating impact cases into the ways impact is communicated and measured,” explained Daniel Vasconcelos.
Other topics focused on how to foster a human-centred team culture that provides the flexibility needed to prepare organisations for the future and for the next generations.
The conference marking INPI’s 50th anniversary brought together a large number of senior state representatives, including the Minister of Justice and Secretaries of State for Justice, as well as the President of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the President of the European Patent Office (EPO) and the President of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). Representatives of Portuguese businesses were also in attendance, including COTEC’s Director, alongside senior business leaders, academics, law firms and other intellectual property experts.
