INESC TEC leads project to improve productivity and quality of wine production

The Centre for Robotics in Industry and Intelligent Systems (CRIIS) and the Centre for Applied Photonics (CAP) at INESC TEC will develop an automatic platform to integrate robotic-assisted intelligent photonics sensors, with artificial intelligence and systems biology.

In partnership with the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP) and ADVID, the OmicBots project (High-Throughput Integrative Omic-Robots Platform for a Next Generation Physiology-based Precision Viticulture) will explore the metabolic pathways of the grapevines to understand the physiology and metabolism of the vine in situ.

“This project’s case study is the Douro region, which is exposed to climate change, and will provide the wine industry with an innovative and highly technological solution to improve quality production, economically efficient and ecologically sustainable”, said Mário Cunha, the CRIIS researcher who coordinates the project.

Using INESC TEC’s knowledge in the areas of robotics and phototonic sensors, as well as FCUP’s expertise in international recognition in integrative biology, the results obtained will benefit companies that develop sensors and the industry itself, as well as service providers.

Recently approved by the Foundation for Science and Technology, this project received close to €259K of funding, and will start in January 2022.

The INESC TEC researcher mentioned in this news piece is associated with UP-FCUP.
