INESC TEC organises workshop on Artificial Intelligence for Biometrics at WACV 2021

INESC TEC participated in the first day of the Winter Applications in Computer Vision conference 2021(WACV 2021), on January 5, with the xAI4Biometrics: Workshop on Explainable & Interpretable Artificial Intelligence for Biometrics. The workshop was organised in partnership with the European Association of Biometrics, with the support of Data Science Portugal, Data Science for Social Good Portugal, and MDPI Computers Journal.

The xAI4Biometrics Workshop aimed at promoting a better understanding, through explainability and interpretability, of currently common and accepted practices in several and varied applications of biometrics, which affect the daily life of an ever-growing population.

This pioneer edition of the Explainable & Interpretable Artificial Intelligence for Biometrics Workshop received eight paper submissions that previously went through a double-blind review process, with the Program Chairs coordinating a set of nearly 20 elements in the review process. This task resulted in a range of five accepted papers that were presented in the oral sessions of the workshop.

Jaime Cardoso, coordinator of INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM), was responsible for the opening sessions. Jaime Cardoso teamed up with Cynthia Rudin (Duke University) and Matt Fredrikson (Carnegie Mellon University) as General Chairs of the workshop.

The Keynote Talks of the event had the participation of Prof. Peter Eisert (Humboldt University of Berlin and Fraunhofer HHI), with the title “Explaining Deep Neural Network Decisions for Enhanced Biometric Systems”, and Prof. Cynthia Rudin (Duke University), with the presentation entitled “At the Two Extremes of Interpretability in Machine Learning: Very Sparse Models and Interpretable Deep Neural Networks”.

The scientific article “An Explainable Attention-Guided Iris Presentation Attack Detector”, by Cunjian Chen and Arun Ross (Michigan State University), received the Best Paper Award and a voucher by INESC TEC.

The event’s organising team was composed of Ana F. Sequeira and Wilson Silva (Program Chairs), Sara Oliveira and João R. Pinto (Publicity Chairs), and Tiago Gonçalves (Publicity Chair and Sponsorship co-Chair). Luís Teixeira (INESC TEC and FEUP), Ana Rebelo (INESC TEC), and Isabel Rio-Torto (INESC TEC and FEUP) were also members of the Technical Program Committee.

The researchers mentioned in this news piece are associated with INESC TEC, FCT, and UP-FEUP.
