INESC TEC part of new European project dedicated to cutting-edge digital technologies

A strategic European initiative that focuses on mobility, logistics, healthcare, agriculture, and construction, towards improving the lives of citizens and businesses through a more effective, intelligent, and autonomous management of information. The A-IQ Ready project joins said initiative, with INESC TEC as one of the participants.

In the long term, the results of this project will contribute to improve Europe’s innovation potential through the development of intelligent and autonomous technologies and systems that provide secure and reliable tools for strategic value chains.

Moreover, the A-IQ Ready – Artificial Intelligence using Quantum measured Information for real-time distributed systems at the edge – aims to benefit from the numerous applications that can result from the use of a quantum sensor, which collects and transmits information in high quantities. This type of sensor stands out for its stable measurement core, independent of external factors like temperature, humidity, or speed, unlike current sensors – which react more easily to these conditions, thus requiring regular calibration. The project addresses the combination of this information with that coming from several other sensors, and its use along the edge-to-cloud continuum using artificial intelligence techniques.

Devices equipped with these sensors provide the basic data, crucial to the whole value chains associated with information technology, which includes activities like collection, storage, or management of information. The results of this process should support companies – for instance, those that provide certain specific services, like the development of applications to support business – or the end users, by designing products that facilitate the daily lives of citizens.

INESC TEC is involved from the start-up phase of the project, and it will seek to develop the equipment and its programs – which will be connected to the sensors, collecting and processing data using artificial intelligence tools, while addressing of communication, storage and energy consumption costs. The Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM) and the Human-Centered Computing and Information Science (HumanISE) are INESC TEC’s centres involved in this initiative.

The official kick-off of the project took place on February 1 and 2, in Palma de Mallorca. João Canas Ferreira, the head of the project at INESC TEC and researcher at CTM, states that “we focus on optimising the interface between hardware, validating and processing the information collected in real-time, while creating the conditions for its organised use among the higher levels of the system”. The researcher stated that INESC TEC’s work will be “more directed to applications in the healthcare area, such as assessing the physical and emotional state of drivers “.

The project lasts 36 months, with the participation of 50 partners from 16 countries. Moreover, it’s part of the Horizon Europe Programme, an initiative by the European Union that aims (until December 2027) to support research and innovation activities worth €95.5B – with INESC TEC benefiting from €384K for this project.
