Blue entrepreneurship, research, innovation and investment. This was the motto of the 2019 edition of the European Maritime Day (EMD), an annual event promoted by the European Commission (DG MARE), which took place on Lisbon Congress Centre between 16 and 17 May and that had the participation of INESC TEC.
With a programme that included workshops, breakout sessions, business meetings, pitches and an exhibition component (EMD EXPO), EMD presented itself as the meeting point among European players, bringing together more than a thousand stakeholders from different sectors of the blue economy. The main goals of this initiative were also related to the sharing of knowledge and the disclosure of new opportunities and partnerships, in which several sessions were the stage for the presentation of projects, products and ideas.
INESC TEC was mostly present in the exhibition component through the demonstration of the TEC4SEA infrastructure and the references to several projects related to the themes of this edition. Technologies such as optical fibre sensors to measure CO2 levels on water, a float capable of monitoring surface ocean currents, a drone for the control and protection of marine environments and a broadband marine communication systems were exhibited over the two days of the event. Videos and flyers on several other technologies applied to the sea and developed in project such as UNEXMIN, VAMOS, SPILLESS, ROSM, CORAL, MELOA, MARRISK, BLUECOM+, MARECOM, completed the technology exhibition in this event, which captured the interest of several national and international partners in collaborating with INESC TEC.
The EMD 2019, which was prepared since 2008, was also co-organised by the Ministry of the Sea (Sea Policy Directorate General) and the City Council of Lisbon with the collaboration of the Fórum Oceano, the entity responsible for organising the exhibit component of the event, with the participation of several sectors of the blue economy, with particular interest in the demonstration and promotion of its products and services.
