INESC TEC participates in the Cross-border project named RADAR_ON_RAIA, which is coordinated by CETMAR – Centro Tecnológico del Mar_Fundación CETMAR and approved by POCTEP (Operative Program of Cross Border Cooperation Spain – Portugal), with a budget of around EUR 1.5 million and a duration of 36 months.
The project aims at consolidating a cross-border ecosystem of scientific excellence in the field of the HF Radar (High Frequency Radar) technology. For that, it has a consortium of nine partners from Portugal and Spain, which, besides INESC TEC, includes universities (of Vigo, Santiago de Compostela), institutes, research centres, agencies and public entities (IH, INEGI , CETMAR, INTECMAR, IIM-CSIC, Puertos del Estado).
The RADAR_ON_RAIA project, whose kick-off meeting was held in Vigo on 18 June, aims at strengthening the cross-border ocean observation infrastructure: RAIA Observatory, which is in operation since 2008. This increase will be achieved through the integration of the HF Radar technology, creating a radar network that will significantly contribute to the provision of new products and services of marine emergency management, characterisation of marine energy resources, marine waste management and coastal risks, as well as the support to the maritime traffic management.
The project will allow free access to data (large quantities of quality data), which, combined with training initiatives and awareness for the use of the data generated by the network, and with stakeholders from different economic areas, will foster a greater integration of regional science, technology and business systems.
INESC TEC is responsible for the design and development of a catalogue service compatible with the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards and the INSPIRE Directive, for the implementation of search services (discovery services) and, with that, to provide the HF Radar data in an open access.
The Centre for Information Systems and Computer Graphics (CSIG) participates in this project, being represented by researchers Artur Rocha, Lino Oliveira, Paulo Monteiro and Alexandre Costa.
The RADAR_ON_RAIA project is co-funded in 75% by the programme Interreg V-A Spain-Portugal (POCTEP) 2014-2020.
