INESC TEC research features in the international scientific journal “Sensors”

The work developed by INESC TEC researchers on optical fibre featured on the cover of the February edition of the international scientific journal Sensors (MDPI). The work presented demonstrated a proof of concept to increase the sensitivity of sensors in fibre optics, using a Graphene Oxide (GO) coating for aqueous glucose solutions in a concentration range of 25 to 200 mg/dL – a common range in blood studies.

The work developed by Cristina Cunha, researcher at INESC TEC, was first developed as part of her master’s thesis – supervised by the researchers Susana Novais and Orlando Frazão -, leading to the publication of a scientific paper. “Enhanced Sensitivity in Optical Sensors through Self-Image Theory and Graphene Oxide Coating” (DOI: https://doi.org/10.3390/s24030891), by Cristina Cunha, Catarina Monteiro, António Vaz, Susana Silva, Orlando Frazão and Susana Novais, is the name of the work available in the February issue of Sensors.

Now, Cristina Cunha is continuing her research at INESC TEC, within the scope of the SmartCap project – focusing on the development of antibacterial optical technology based on graphene oxide for application in haemodialysis catheters.
