INESC TEC researcher elected President of the Portuguese Association of Classification and Data Analysis

Paula Brito, researcher at INESC TEC’s Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support Laboratory (LIAAD) and associate professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto (FEP), was recently elected President of CLAD – Portuguese Association of Classification and Analysis Data, for the 2020-2023 triennium.

With a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the Paris – Dauphine University (1991), Paula Brito has been focusing her research on Multivariate Data Analysis, namely on the Classification and Analysis of Symbolic Data, fields in which she collaborates with national and foreign researchers, from Europe, Brazil and the Far East.

Between 2013 and 2015, she was President of the IASC – International Association for Statistical Computing, one of the main bodies in the field of Computational Statistics worldwide; moreover, from 2020 onwards, she will lead the aforementioned scientific association, a reference in the field of Data Science in Portugal – together with Carlos Ferreira (Vice-president, DEGEIT & IEETA), Pedro Campos (INESC TEC/FEP), Sónia Dias (INESC TEC/ESTG-IPVC) and Conceição Rocha (INESC TEC).

Founded in June 1994, CLAD aims to promote and coordinate research and the use of data classification and analysis, assuming itself as the top national body for discussion and mutual support in these matters.

Paula Brito perceives this election as “an honour”, at personal and professional levels, particularly to the institutions she works with, as a researcher and teacher. The elected Board’s main priority is bringing the Association closer to the business world, focusing on the opportunities concerning Data Science, as well as on the youngest students and researchers. “The main challenge of the newly elected mandate is the organisation, for the first time, of the conference of the International Federation of Classification Societies (IFCS), which will take place in Porto, in July 2022″, said the researcher.

The INESC TEC researcher mentioned in this news piece is associated with UP-FEP.
