INESC TEC researcher participates in an international study on Artificial Intelligence Opportunities

João Mendes Moreira, researcher at INESC TEC’s Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support Laboratory (LIAAD), and lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), participated in the development of a study entitled “Opportunities of Artificial Intelligence”, published in June 2020.

This work, requested by the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE), focuses on Artificial Intelligence technologies, as well as their impact and current regulation at the EU level. The study indicates several fields that could benefit from the introduction of these technologies, namely at a socioeconomic level, while presenting a methodology for assessing the suitability of European policies and legislation in the context of Artificial Intelligence.

The Policy Department for Economic, Scientific and Quality of Life Policies presented this document, elaborated by several authors from the Centre for Strategy and Evaluation Services (CSES), with important inputs by João Mendes Moreira and Anastasios Drosou, from the Centre for Research and Technology (Greece).

According to the INESC TEC researcher, “the study showed that although the European Union (EU) is not the leader in data acquisition – a field led by the U.S.A. and China – the EU has a strong presence in several sectors (leading some of them) where the integration of Artificial Intelligence ensures said presence/leadership. The automotive, financial services, telecommunications, retail, travel, transportation and logistics or even electricity and natural gas sectors are some of the examples worth mentioning“. The study also emphasises the fact that there is still a low degree of regulation at the global level, which will naturally tend to increase. Nevertheless, the EU has done a relevant work in terms of Artificial Intelligence ethics.

The INESC TEC researcher mentioned in this news piece is associated with UP-FEUP.
