INESC TEC researcher receives award in the 3rd Doctoral Congress in Engineering

The paper presented by Sandra Rodrigues, a researcher of INESC TEC’s Centre for Applied Photonics (CAP), was distinguished in the 3rd Doctoral Congress in Engineering (DCE2019), which was held at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), between 27 and 28 July of 2019.

The “best poster presentation” distinction in the Symposium on Physics Engineering of DCE19, at FEUP, was given to the paper entitled “Trapping nanometer sized particles with optical fibre tweezers – a computational study”, which was written by Sandra Rodrigues, Paulo Marques and Pedro Jorge from CAP and also by Joana Paiva and João Paulo Cunha from INESC TEC’s Centre for Biomedical Engineering Research (C-BER).

In this work, a computation study was carried out on the configuration of SNOM (Scanning Nearfield Optical Microscopy) optical tweezers, based on an optical fibre taper coated with a fine gold film and a nanometric tip aperture. The goal was to determine the ideal geometric configuration of this taper, in order to allow the trapping of particles with diameters between 100 nm and 500 nm.

This study arose from a collaboration between CAP and C-BER, under the NanoSTIMA project, coordinated by João Paulo Cunha.

The paper written by the researcher Sandra Rodrigues is a part of the Master thesis in Physical Engineering of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP), entitled “Optical tweezers for micro/nano manipulation and single cell diagnostic”, which is being supervised by Pedro Jorge (CAP), Paulo Marques (CAP) and João Paulo Cunha (C-BER).

The researchers mentioned in this news piece are associated with INESC TEC, UP-FCUP and UP-FEUP.
