INESC TEC researcher teaches a course on electric energy markets in Brazil

The theme «Futuros mercados de energia elétrica» (in English «Future electric energy markets») led the researcher of INESC TEC’s Centre for Power and Energy Systems (CPES), Tiago Soares, to Brazil to teach a course, as a guest professor, at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais (Brazil).

The intensive training, which lasted for ten days from 19 to 29, November, was targeted towards Master and PhD students. With sessions of four hours a day, the course aimed to enlighten the students on the challenges that arise from the electric energy market, resulting from the continuous introduction of distributed energy resources and the appearance of the consumer with generation capacity (known as prosumer) in the power system.

This way, the course focused on the study of market methodologies capable of dealing with the uncertainty of renewable production, as well as with the challenge of allowing a greater participation and stimulation of prosumers and energy communities in the market. New electricity market designs with stochastic (probability calculation) and peer-to-peer aspects were also addressed.

The theme is particularly important given the recent directives issued by several EU countries within the scope of the energy communities and their role in the future of the electricity system.

The researcher mentioned in this news piece is associated with INESC TEC.
