INESC TEC researcher wins Best PhD Poster Award at EEEIC 2020

Mohamed Lotfi, researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Power and Energy Systems (CPES), won the Best PhD Poster Award in the 20th edition of the IEEE International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering (EEEIC 2020). João Catalão – Lofti’s supervisor in the Doctoral Programme in Sustainable Energy Systems at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) – and Mohammad Javadi, both researchers at CPES, were the co-authors of the winning poster. The annual event was closely associated with the Energy Systems field, and took place online, between June 9 and 12.

Abdelrahman Ashraf (German University in Cairo), Mustafa Zahran (German University in Cairo) and Gerardo J. Osório (University of Beira Interior) also participated as co-authors in the the award-winning research work, entitled “A Dijkstra-Inspired Algorithm for Optimized Real-Time Tasking with Minimal Energy Consumption”. The work was based on an optimisation algorithm targeting industrial applications, called “Dijkstra Optimal Tasking” (DOT), which allows scheduling tasks and increasing their speed of completion, while reducing the costs of energy consumption.

The articles “Photovoltaic electric power estimation with a machine learning algorithm based on neural networks and validated with deterministic approaches” and “The Italian procedural approach for assessing frequency and voltage behaviour during a bottom-up restoration strategy” were also awarded, reaching the second and third places, respectively.

During the event, more than 350 scientific papers were presented, written by researchers, teachers and students from different parts of the globe.

The evaluation committee, composed of college lecturers, was responsible for the analysis of scientific production, which takes into account the criteria of innovation, scientific interest and adequate expression.

The INESC TEC researchers mentioned in this news piece are associated with INESC TEC and UP-FEUP.
