INESC TEC supports business information systems

Henrique Mamede and José Correia, from INESC TEC’s Centre for Information Systems and Computer Graphics (CSIG), collaborated with JMD – a company dedicated to represent and market brands – in the design of a new information systems architecture. In addition, this partnership translated into two specialised consultancy projects.

In 2019, JMD’s Information System did not follow the evolution of the activities of representation and distribution of consumer products. In this sense, the company contacted INESC TEC, and the aforementioned researchers analysed the situation, proposing a new architecture of information systems, aligned with the business strategy. For the execution of this work, the researchers resorted to an adaptation of the Enterprise Architecture practice, based on The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF).

The result of the work carried out was a transformation plan, composed of a set of projects that will enable the migration from the current architecture to the future JMD’s information systems architecture.

The collaboration with JMD continued through one the projects (completed in March) of said transformation plan, with the INESC TEC team proceeding with the technical monitoring of the implementation of a new integrated management system (ERP), which will support the entire operationalisation of the company, covering most of the elements of the company’s value chain (procurement, purchase-to-pay, warehouse management, sales and distribution).

This successful collaboration with the company, part of the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Society, was an excellent opportunity for INESC TEC researchers to apply their knowledge and support the industry sector, also leading to a scientific publication.

The researchers mentioned in this news piece are associated with INESC TEC and Universidade Aberta.
